OPENING EVENT: Saturday 18th May 2-4pm. All Welcome.

Soul Courageous depicts more personal and emotive topics; love, joy, and loss; fear, pride and doubt; belonging, regret and yearning. The heart of the series is very much rooted in my own story and life experiences; the highs and lows, the good times, and not so good.

These intimate reflections have been complemented with more general images of the world around us. The printmaking technique adopted for the entire series is that of the reduction lino-print that was a technique that I started using at the beginning of my printmaking journey.

I have used the linocut medium to challenge myself to provide interpretations of more painterly artistic styles. The style of the work pays homage to past greats; Matisse and Picasso and more contemporary artists; Basquiat, Motherwell, Martin Sharp and others. The end work features bold use of colour with imagery taking on a poster-like feel. Influences can be seen in expressionism, fauvism, primitivism as well as 1960’s psychedelia.

Each print could take between 4-8 weeks as each colour dried. In between colours I had time to reflect on the subject matter and began writing down my thoughts and feelings as well as adopting song lyrics and prose that I felt matched the creative content. Music is of great importance in my life and some work is directly influenced by songs I listen to while creating and printmaking.

The full series has 24 prints and accompanying writing as a coupled pair that fit together into a broader creative framework.
